Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Addison Tinsley is a part of US Black heritage.

Addison "Add" Tinsley was born about 1845 in Pike County, Missouri.[1] In 1850 he lived in Cuivre, Pike, Missouri and belonged to Addison Tinsley.[2] For the 1860 census he could have belonged to Addison Tinsley still. There were no names listed with the enslaved's census. Add was in the military on the 19th of August 1864. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Colored Troops 18th Infantry.[3][4] He married around that same time and a son was born to him and Millie Black in 1866.

In 1870 they lived in Cross Hill, Laurens, South Carolina.[5] Add was working as a farmer, while Millie took care of the family. Their son John was just three years old, and "Eler" (Eloise) was two months. The family was still in Cross Hill ten years later. Add was now thirty-five years old, and listed as a married, mulatto, farmer.[6] Millie was now thirty-two[6] and kept busy with the family. They now had five children in the home.[6]

They had one milk cow, one other cow, eight hens, seven acres of indian corn, and 50 bushels of corn. He also had cultivated fourteen acres of cotton and had five bales on hand.[8]

Add was listed in a pension file, created the 30th of September 1890 with his mother Mary Lewis listed as a dependent.[9]

Add died on the 3rd of October 1903. He was laid to rest in the New Hope Church cemetery in Mountville.[10] His tombstone reads as follows
