Biography

William J. Tippit was living in Pike County, Alabama, when he met and married Miss Martha Davis 18 June 1842. Six children were born to this union. Shortly thereafter, the Tippits moved to Mississippi, where they remained for approximately twenty years.

Although William Tippit was 40 years old when the Civil War began, he felt compelled to serve his country. He and his 16-year old son, James Louis, went to Ellisville (Jones), Mississippi, where they enlisted on 5 October 1861. He signed up for the duration of the war, serving as a Private in Company B, 27th Regiment, Infantry Division, under Captain A. McLemore. He was discharged on 10 July 1862 in Mobile, Alabama, with a disability. Military records indicate that William was 5' 11" tall with dark complexion, black hair, and black eyes.

After his discharge, William returned to Mississippi where he farmed for a living. Martha had died by this time, but her date of death and burial is unknown. William married his second wife, Elizabeth M. Roberts 1 December 1867 MS, and seven children were born, only three survived to reach adulthood. Elizabeth was born 2 November 1837 MS.

Shortly after his marriage, the Tippits moved to Louisiana and settled in Rapides Parish. William built his home near the small community of Hicks, Louisiana, and although the house has long since gone, a maple tree which he planted in the front yard still stands today inside the fenced enclosure.

It has been reported by older members of this family that shortly after the birth of his last baby, William J. Tippit moved his family back to Mississippi. Before his death, they moved in with his oldest son, James Louis Tippit. James's oldest daughter, Maud was a very young child, but she remembered her grandfather well. She was a sickly child, and her responsibility was to fan grandfather when he was on his death bed.

William J. Tippit died 27 May 1886 (Panola), Mississippi, at the age of 65, and is buried in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, three miles east of Pope, MS. His epitath reads: "His many virtues form the noblest monument to his memory." Elizabeth Tippit took the small children and moved on to Texas where she died in Iola (Grimes), Texas. Her exact burial is unknown.
