  • My sister saw his headstone in the Tipton Cemetery and took a photo of it. Our uncle Donald said it is our great grandfather.

Chris Carter of the Yancey History Assoc. sent me census data that in 1880 Joseph Mc, age 26, a white male born in NC, a farmer in Jacks Creek was head of household. His wife was Mary J age 21 and daughter Margaret age 4 along with Winnie L McMahon his mother in law lived there. He also sent me that Mack Tipton, age 19 married MaryJane McMahan (difference in spelling from census) age 16, on June 5, 1875

In the 1900 census Joseph Tipton (Mack) born in Dec. of 1853 in Cane River, head of household in the house were: Mary J his wife Jan. 1859 Margaret F his daughter born April 1876 Laura L. , his daughter born in Fen. 1883 Allie M. his daughter born July 1890 Sammie S. his son born Jan. 1891 Winnie McMahan his mother in law born Jan. 1833

An earlier census from 1870 has Mack's mother in law and wife... living in the home but not Mack so I do not know forsake where he was living prior to is marriage to Mary Jane. 1880 Census: MaMahan, Winey (misspelling) age 37 born in NC living in Jacks Creek Twp Mary age 11 Lucretia age 9 Note no husband so she must be divorced or widowed.
