This is family lore. However, based on images of JBT's ancestors (who look EXACTLY like their illegitimate descendants) I believe this version to be true.
John Butler Tipton married heiress Adeline "Addie" Dorcas Anderson on August 28, 1889.
He reportedly died the following year.
However, I have been completely unable to find any legitimate death records.
We believe he abandoned Addie a year after the marriage.
According to family lore, Addie (reportedly very attractive and definitely wealthy) never remarried because she was still married to JBT. And obviously it was far more respectable to be a widow than an abandoned wife.
JBT met Sarah Cordelia Plott in Missouri [date unknown]. They never married, but he fathered her child, Kelly Manuel Tipton (1897-1953).
JBT didn't marry Sarah because he was still married to Addie.
JBT was a riverboat gambler (charming and smooth) who was killed by being thrown overboard after cheating at cards sometime in 1897, the year his son was born.
A photo of JBT's grandfather, for whom he was named, looks EXACTLY like JBT's great-grandson, my husband, down to the cleft in his chin.
A portrait of JBT's great-grandfather bears a striking resemblance to two of my husband's sons, who look very little like their sire.
