Biography

I am an "Army Brat", daughter of Noel Jackson Tirey and Demetria (Hernandez) Tirey, and was born and partially raised in Madisonville, Hopkins, Kentucky. My daddy, Noel served two tours of duty in Korea and three in Vietnam.

While we were living in Okinawa, Naha base, my mother was killed. Soon after, my father moved my older sister and I to Madisonville to be raised by my dear grandmother Inez (Slaton) Tirey Wilson, while my father continued to serve in the Army,Vietnam.

I'm a professional engineer, graduated from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) with degrees in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. I continued my education at the University of Miami (FL) and later Defense System Management College (DSMC) in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

If you review the profiles which I manage, you'll notice that I pay attention to the details, and am source hungry, like so many other family researchers. So thanks for your patience, regarding my suggested changes and requests.....they are only meant to improve the profiles and expand the research process.

Best regards and wishes to my fellow researchers and our worldwide families during this Covid 19 crisis. God Bless.

Elide, hi!

I was trying to use the existing numbers to keep the Sarahs straight, blew it! I can't even figure out how to send you a message, sent first to a "no-reply" box! Got a notice today of a Matthew Abbe who wants to merge the Sarahs, hope message to him gets through.

I find Wikitree confusing, that's why I try to only get information from it & not contribute any more than absolutely necessary. Lois Slaton

Hi Lois,

It takes a little time to understand the nuances of Wikitree, but the more you contribute the easier it will get. There are a few good tutorials on the system.

Meanwhile, we should proceed with the merge.

Best Wishes.

Best wishes.

Elida, don't know if this will help or muddy the waters further but

Josiah & Sarah Slaton are shown as siblings, children of James & Elizabeth Slaton

AND

John Morris & Sarah Todd are shown as siblings, children of Benjamin Lankford Todd!

posted by Lois Slaton
No, it doesn't muddy the waters at all. This is the information which I collected many years ago.

Concerning Sarah Elizabeth (b)Todd (m) Slaton & Sarah Elizabeth (b) Slaton (m)Todd:

Sarah Elizabeth TODD married Josiah Browder SLATON, b. 22 May 1832, KY, d. 08 July 1929, KY.

Sarah Elizabeth SLATON married John Morris TODD, b. 11 Aug 1831, KY, d. 28 Feb 1873, KY. She is sister of Josiah Browder Slaton & daughter of James Slaton and Elizabeth Bailey Slaton.

You seem to be able to research better than I, so I'll leave it up to you. I hope my information is officially correct & can help straighten our Sarahs out. Lois

posted by Lois Slaton
Yes, you have it correct. I'm glad you realize the differences. Please proceed with approving the merge. Thanks.

Well, hello, there, cousin!

I started collecting family information about 1963/65, back in the genealogical dark ages, most of it was obtained from family members with great to somewhat foggy memories, haha.

Do you know that we are related to entertainment star Dorothy Lamour? She was born to John W(Watson or Wilson) Slaton, common relative is Arthur Slayden, back a generation or few from James. Born Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton, 10 Dec 1914. I think the link might be thru one of James's other sons.

I hope we can work together on whatever possible. Lois Slaton

Hi cousin Lois,

Yes, I did know about the Dorothy Lamour connection. Looking forward to working with you.

Elida, thanks for attaching Wm Hinton’s bible record to his daughter Polly Hinton ’s profile. It has different dates than those found in EM Whitfield’s book, which is intriguing. It also inspired me to add profiles for her siblings.

Hi Elisa. I'm very new to Wikitree and was wondering about one of the trees that you manage. John Tolbert Armstrong, who married Bessie Evelyn Woodruff, is my grandfather. I would like to add his (their) children, i.e., my mother and her siblings, but I'm not sure how to do that. Thank you so much for the research on my family. I never knew my grandfather's siblings or his parents names.

Hi Susan,

Welcome to Wikitree! There are several tutorials, suggest you start by reviewing New Member How-to pages which may save you a lot of time and frustration. Are you new to genealogy? There is another free site called FamilySearch which is an excellent site for sources. Let me know if I can help.

12/8/19:

"According to the records of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Hugh Kirkwood, Sr. was born circa 1745 in Ireland. He brought his family to America prior to the Revolutionary War."

Yes, I've seen that also. It is also noted that his wife, Agnes Bowie, was from Dumbarton, Scotland. Since Belfast, Ireland was across from Stranraer, Scotland, many people travelled back & forth between the two port cities. So there was confusion at some point where he was born. However, I've seen records of church baptism of some of the Kirkwood children in Belfast at St. Mary's Presbyterian Church, including this Hugh. I will update this profile with the correct information & this notation.

Thanks! JKH

Elizabeth Wilkie (1764-1855) is my 6th great aunt. Hubert Weldon Wilkey, my 1st cousin 3x removed, wrote two books documenting our Wilkie/Wilkey family. His first book, "The Jonathan Tree", written in 1970, concentrated on the family of Jonathan Jackson Wilkey (my 3rd great grandfather). I am listed by name with my family on page 93 of that book. By the way, like Hubert I was born and raised in Hopkins County, Kentucky.

In 1976, cousin Hubert wrote his second book, "The Wilkie/Wilkey Family", which included the history of my 6th great grandparents, William Wilkie Sr and Elizabeth (Jobs) Wilkie, and their descendants, including my Tirey family.

By the way, Hubert assembled data for both books the old-fashioned way, by interviewing family members, family Bibles, documents, Federal Archive microfilms, letters, etc. There are several errors in such things as birth and marriage dates and places, but those are forgivable in light of the limited resources he had available to him during his work in the 1960's and early 1970'....way before the internet. I am in process of writing a book about my family which of course includes my Wilkie/Wilkey family.

I am not sure how Mr. Jerry Cox gathered his data, but I know my cousin Hubert and I have very specific information which shows our family surname as Wilkie/Wilkey.

Didn't see this comment before today... I only get notification if your comment here is posted as a reply to one of mine.

Glad you have family books available. I'm not able to have many resources and library use is difficult in the Ozarks.

Jerry's my cousin and he networked with many other genealogies for many years starting with snail mail before e-mailing was available. Possibly there was some overlapping research between Hubert and Jerry. I haven't any access to his personal notes that source his material on the notes included in his GEDCOM but sources are cited within many narratives in Jerry's Notes.

I'm showing 9 Wikie into Wilkie merges required between the gedcoms of George Stradtman and Jerry Cox. Four are ready for me to merge (Isabel. Janet, Alexander and William) and 5 waiting to be put on trusted list: 2 managed by George (William and Elspeth) and 3 others managed by you (Sarah, Rebecca and George). If I have missed any, Let me know. I'd like to complete all the merges together as soon as possible.

It's easier for me to process merges in family groups. It avoids anything falling into cracks.

I haven't been on here for a while, but I need to do more work on my tree, especially now that my parents are both having health issues.

Hi =) Just thought I'd let you know we are 11th cousins thru the Bryans. My grandma was also a Scott too, so we might be related that way as well.

I agree sources on the Poage book would have solved all our problems! I would be happy if either birthday were confirmed with documentation. I am partial to May 1st as that is my birthday! If we could just find Isaac McCulley's bible!
Wow! Your profiles are great. i joined a few months ago and haven't really added anything. I'm related to various folks in KY.
