Biography

Anna Tisdale was born on January 27, 1672, in Taunton, Plymouth Colony, the daughter of John Tisdale Jr.[1] and Hannah Rogers.[2][3]

Anna married George Leonard on July 4, 1695, in Taunton,[4] the son of Thomas and Mary (Watson) Leonard.[2] All of her children were born to this marriage. They were the first settlers of Norton and acquired large tracts of land and set up an iron works, and produced many descendants. George was active in local politics and church, and was a major in the militia.[5][3] On 6 Dec 1708 George Leonard of Taunton and wife Anna sold 200 acres formerly of their father John Tisdale late of Taunton, deceased. Anna acknowledged her signature on 24 April 1726.[2] Major George Leonard died at Norton September 5, 1716, in his 46th year.[6] George's will, dated 30 August 1716 and inventoried 29 October 1716, named wife Ann, daughters Phebe, Anna, Abigail, Marcy and Mary, eldest son George, second son Nathaniel and son Ephraim, sisters Elizabeth Williams and Mary Tisdal.[2]

During the latter part of 1718 to 1720 Mrs. Anna Leonard and her son George contested the rates set by the assessors of the town of Norton and took the matter to court, which also ignited a lengthy disturbance in the church with one of the assessors, John Skinner.[7]

Anna married secondly Nathaniel Thomas, as his second wife, on September 3, 1730 in Norton.[8]

Anna Thomas died at Norton September 1733, age 61.[9]

Nathaniel Thomas died in 1739. In his will, dated 5 October 1737 and proved 13 March 1738, he mentioned his third wife Mary, and among others, Rev. Nathaniel Leonard, Anna's son.[2]
