Biography

1776 Project
Private Peter Tittle served with Westmoreland County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Peter Tittle is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A116001.

Peter Tittle, Jr. was born October 20, 1746, in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania and died March 26, 1834, in Beatty Station, Pennsylvania. During the American Revolutionary War, Peter enlisted as a Private in Captain John McClelland's company. Peter is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A116001. DAR records indicate that his wife's name was Sarah Whiteside. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their sons, Jonathan Tittle, who married Susanna Beatty, and James Tittle, who married Ann Fraeme; and of their daughters, Nancy Tittle, who married William Anderson; and Sarah Tittle, who married William Peeples. [1]

Peter's Find A Grave calls him "Captain" Peter Tittle. It is unclear if this is an honorary title, or if he remained in the service after the Revolutionary War. This memorial also gives his date of birth as October 26th, however the headstone agrees with the DAR records and has inscribed October 20, 1746: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/8074004/peter-tittle#view-photo=27758509 (so the F.A.G. dob is a typo) [2]

The family tradition says he was a good shot with his rifle and was able to count his scalps by the dozens. He was a member of Capt. John McClelland’s Company of “Rangers on the Frontier of Westmoreland County from 1778 - 1783.

1742, 20 September. Peter Tittle born, son of John. Early Lutheran Baptisms & Marriages in Southeastern Pennsylvania, the records of Rev. John Casper Stoever, Jr., from 1730 to 1779. [Notes: Whitesides & the Maryland Cresaps are in these records, including Ralph Whitesides. With a child born in 1742, father John Tittle might be an age to be the brother of Carlisle Peter Tittle above, born circa 1725.] I believe this Peter Tittle is the revolutionary war Peter Tittle Jr. who was rised by his uncle Peter Tittle Senior when his father John died in 1747.
