Mary Emma Titus and twin sister Mabel Edna were born in West Potton (later known as Dunkin, Quebec) in 1877, the daughters of Osborn Titus and Mary Skinner. Mary was first recorded on the Potton census of 1881, at age 4, with her parents and a long list of mostly-older siblings.[1] Similarly, she was recorded at age 14 on the 1891 census.[2]
In 1893, Mary married Orrin William Bailey.[3] According to the 1900 census referenced below, the couple moved to Vermont in 1896. They remained in Westfield, Vermont for the rest of their lives, and all of their five children were born there:
Natalie Mabel, b. 26 Oct. 1899; m. George J. Lewis, 12 June 1981; d. 10 Dec. 1988 (West Hartford, CT)
Alton Alfred, b. 22 Aug. 1908; m. Edith Laura Asplund, 21 Feb. 1942 (Hartford, Ct.); d. 1 Aug. 1989
Helen Maud, b. 18 Feb. 1912; d. 28 Sept. 1913 (drowning), and
Kathleen Jennie, b. 7 Nov. 1914; m. Hylas Gordon Bowen, 7 Nov. 1936; d. 6 June 1990.
The 1900 and 1910 censuses record Orrin and Mary in Westfield, with their first two then three children respectively.[4][5] By the time of the 1920 census, their oldest child Ethel had married and moved away, leaving the three youngest children (their fourth child had passed away very young).[6]
On the 1930 census, Orrin and Mary still had one child (their youngest) living with them.[7] By 1940, all the children had moved away.[8]
Orrin and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March 1943 - see attached clipping.[9] Mary lost her husband in 1946, after which she moved to Barre, Vermont to live with her daughter Kathleen.
