COUNTRY NEWS [12]The Dunolly Express reports the death at
Tarnagulla of on old resident, Mr. John
Titus, on Friday last.[13] The deceased had
been a resident of Tarnagulla for upwards of
eighteen years, and for the last eight
years was totally blind from the
effects of an accident whilst tamping a
charge of powder in a quartz claim on
Growler's Reef. He was a man who had
seen some stirring times in his day. An
American by birth, he served his apprenticeship in the navy of the United States,
and afterwards served with the American
naval brigade through the whole of the
Mexican war. He was one of the first gold
miners in California, and came to the colonies in 1853.
