Biography

Zacheus Tobey, son of Samuel and Abiah (Fish) Tobey, was born 13 Jan. 1703-4 in Sandwich, Massachusetts. On 1 Jan. 1726-7 he married Sarah Pope. She was born 25 Mar. 1706 at Sandwich, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bourne) Pope.[1][2]

Zacheus “bought of Benjamin Spooner, Sept. 19, 1726, land in Dartmouth, which he made his ‘homestead farm’; afterwards bought many other tracts. His wife Sarah joined with him in a deed of gift to their son Elnathan, Dec. 17, 1778. They united in a quit-claim deed of Pope heirs Jan. 24, 1754. He made a division with Content Dexter of land they owned in common 22 July, 1755; he gave lands to his sons Prince and Noah in 1778.

“He was first ensign, then captain, and later major of the 2d regt. of Bristol co. militia.”[3]

On 14 Oct. 1761 Zacheus was appointed guardian of his nephew Thomas Tobey, son of his brother Thomas of Sandwich.[4]

Zacheus Tobey died 1 Feb. 1798 at New Bedford, Massachusetts, aged 96 years.[5]

4. Zaccheus, b. 2 Dec. 1734; m. (1) Anne Sampson; m. (2) Ruthanney Sampson; possibly to Conway in 1778; later to Otsego Co., N.Y.

5. Zoeth, b. 14 July 1737; m. (1) --- ---; m. (2) Abigail Keene in 1782.

6. Lot, b. 26 Sept. 1739; m. (1) Keziah Jenne 1761; m. (2) Elmener Dexter 1776; m. (3) Abigail Tompkins 1790; of New Bedford; later to Greene Co., N.Y.

7. Prince, b. 7 June 1741; m. Jane Delano; to Conway 1778.

8. Elizabeth, b. 24 Apr. 1743.

9. Noah, b. 8 Mar. 1745; m. (1) Lydia Butler; m. (2) Betty Sears 1781; to Conway 1777; later to Saratoga Co., N.Y.

10. Mary, b. 9 Sept. 1747; possibly the Mary Tobey who married Samuel Tobey 26 Jan. 1769 in Sandwich.
