Biography

Archibald was the fifth generation of Archibald Todds in his family. His parents were Adam Todd and Mary Warnock. He was born on 31 Dec 1803 in the area of western South Carolina that would one day become Anderson County. [1]

On 09 Apr 1844, he married Jane Erskine McAllister, and they made their home in Anderson County, South Carolina.[2] Archibald was a printer, and was a founder and co-publisher of the Anderson Gazette for several years. At least three of his sons were also in the printing/publishing business. The Todds had eight children:[3][4]

  1. William Harris Barr (1845-1886)
  2. John Warnock (1847-1930)
  3. Joseph Newton (1849-1851)
  4. James Robert Reid (1851-1923)
  5. Adam Summer (1853-1919)
  6. Albert Whitner (1856-1924)
  7. Andrew Cator (1859-1943)
  8. Mary Archibald (1861-1885)

Later in his life, Archibald worked as Mail Agent on the G. & C. Railroad. He was a member of Odd Fellows and Sons of Temperance.[5] He died on 2 Dec 1860, before the birth of his last child. She was the only daughter, and was named Mary Archibald, in her father's honor. Archibald was buried in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Anderson, Anderson County, South Carolina.[6]
