Origin

No birth record for Lancelot Todd has been found. He was likely born on his father's plantation in Anne Arundel County in the Annapolis area between 1672 and 1677. Lancelot was stated to be under 18 when his uncle, Lancelot Todd, mentioned him in his will which was signed in 1690, and his father died in 1677.[1]

Land Ownership

Lancelot inherited land where the current city of Annapolis exists from his father, Thomas Todd. This land was patented by his father in 1672 and called Todd's Harbor.

1698 - John Howard Sr. conveyed to Lancelot Todd 160 acs. tract called Howard's First Choice.[2]
1698 - Robert Cobby conveyed to Lancelot Todd 100 acs. which was 1/2 of Solomons Hills.[3]
1698 - Lancelot Todd conveyed to Samuel Norwood 120 acs. of Todd's Range.[4]
1701 - Lancelot & Elizabeth Todd conveyed to Philip Howard 160 acs. tract called Howard's First Choice & 100 acs. of Solomons Hills.[5]
1713 - Lancelot Todd, of Baltimore County, gent. conveyed to Thomas Bordley & Thomas Larkin the remainder of Todd's Harbor[6]
1728 - Lancelot Todd, of AA Co., gent. conveys to Benjamin Tasker & Richard Snowden 100 acs. Sewells Coffer, formerly in Balt. Co. & now in AA. Co. [7]

After selling these properties Lancelot claimed several large tracts in Anne Arundel County through the patent process.

1735 - Rebecca's Lot 1,111 acres[8]

Family

According to a land deed of 1701, Lancelot was married to Elizabeth Rockhold by this year. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Mary Rockhold and both she and Lancelot are mentioned in Mary Rockhold's will. [9]

Abstract of Will

I Lancelot Todd of Anne Arundel County being grown crazy and sickly . . .

  • I give to my wife Elizabeth Todd the tract I now live on called Hopes Plain during her natural life and after her decease to my son, Thomas Todd during his natural life and after his decease to my grandson Lance Todd and so to fall from heir to heir forever . . .
  • I give to Thomas Todd one other tract called Hunts Range with all my wearing apparel also I give the five negroes that he has now with him named Jockey, Tobey, Pug, Kit and Cloe.
  • I give to my two sons Lance Todd and John Todd all that tract called Rebecca’s Lot which I lately purchased from young Richard Colegate. I give to my said sons & their heirs forever also I give my son Lance Todd three negroes named Charles, Santo, and Penny.
  • I give to my son John Todd three negroes named Aaron, Luke and Nadal.
  • I give to my son Nathan Todd all the tract called Todds Riske to him & his heirs forever also four negroes named George, Kate, Harry & Mark.
  • I give to my daughter Sarah Dorsey one negro woman named Nan, but the negro woman’s increase all that she shall bring after the date hereof I give to be equally divided amongst my daughter Sarah’s children, her daughter Elizabeth only excluded.
  • I give to my daughter Ruth Dorsey one negro man named Amos also I give her two three year-old steers and two four year-old steers.
  • I give to my wife Elizabeth Todd all the remaining part of my negroes not above mentioned, also I give 49 pounds ten shillings sterling now in the hands of Edward Dorsey as may appear by bond. Also I give my wife one young sorrell horse with her saddle.
  • I give to my granddaughter Elizabeth Dorsey one mulatto boy named Will now in the possession of Edward Dorsey, her father.
  • I give all the remaining part of my personal estate to my wife and three sons to be equally divided amongst them by Capt. Benjamin Howard and Mr. Edward Dorsey with Nathan Todd’s part to be in the hands and care of his mother until he shall arrive to the age of 18 years.

Signed with a signature on the 6th day of May 1735 in the presence of Joseph Hawkins, Aaron Hawkins, Abraham Frizell and Thomas Todd. Probated 16 JUN 1735.[10]

When Elizabeth Todd filed her account of the estate on 4 FEB 1737, the value was a little over L474 sterling.[11]
