Biography

Loutitia was a member of the Baptist Church.
Global Cemeteries Project
Loutitia (Toliver) Kelly is buried in Stockton Cemetery.

Loutitia Toliver (married name Loutitia Kelly) was born in Indiana on 29 December 1846, one of 15 children born to Hiram Toliver and Nancy Jane (Wright) Wood, and the eldest to have survived to adulthood.[1][2]

On 4 July 1867, Loutitia married John Burr Kelly at the home of her father in Washington Township, Greene County, Iowa.[1][3] The family moved to Rooks County, Kansas in about 1880.[1]

Loutitia passed away on 29 or 30 April 1919, and was buried near her husband in Stockton Cemetery at Stockton, Rooks, Kansas.[1][4]

Children of John Burr Kelly and Loutitia (Toliver) Kelly:

  • William Henry (1868-1940) m. Eva Leona Howe
  • Exie Elsie (1869-1952) m. Frank Clyde Gager
  • Leno Gertrude (1873-1954) m. William Robert Hays
  • Charles Hiram (1875-1899)
  • Burnice (1877-1955) m. Elizabeth Berniece Breeze
  • Mary Drusilla (1880-1955) m. William Ralph Stewart
  • Nancy Eunice (1882-1960) m. Charles Roy Gillilan
  • Earl Udell (1886-1961) m. Minnie Bell Young
  • John Burr Jr. (1888-1925) m. Garnett L Bullock
  • Olive Edna (1891-1960)

Middle Name

In the vast majority of records, Loutitia is recorded with no middle name. However, some evidence exists that she may have had a third name.

Many researchers have "Thomas" as Loutitia's middle name in their trees. I have never seen any evidence or reasoning that suggests this is the case, and in fact have seen some bits of evidence that seem to call this assertion into question.

In 1870, a Kelly family is found in Jefferson Township, Madison County, Iowa, that seems to fit the profile of this Kelly family. In it, the wife is listed as "Adellia Kelly." Loutitia being an unusual name, there are nearly as many different spellings of it as I have records; however, this particular spelling is so far off as to not even resemble the name. I have seen on many occasions a family member listed by their middle name in census documents, oftentimes because they were going by that name rather than their first. So naturally I wonder if this may be her middle name. This census entry needs more research corroboration, however, because the information in it is so erroneous.[5]

In the 1860 census, three of the children are listed by their initials: two are her brothers L.H. (Levi Harrison) and L.D. (Lorenzo Dow). Loutitia is also listed by her initials, and on first glance they look like "L.D." (certainly not "L.T.," further evidence against the "Thomas" theory). On closer inspection, if you compare her initial "D" to her brother's, it becomes apparent that a letter "A" was scribed over the "D." One can easily imagine the census taker mishearing her name as "Loutitia Delia," scribing L.D., and then overwriting the "A" after being given the correct spelling. This would appear to lend a bit more heft to the "Adellia" proposal.[6]

There is a third possibility which I will mention briefly: in a Social Security Applications and Claims Index on Ancestry, she is listed as "Mary L Toliver" on the entry for her daughter Mary Stewart's application, suggesting her name may have been "Mary Loutitia." I have seen no other evidence to back this up and the document is from a tertiary source, so I lend this option no creedence absent further evidence to support it.[7] Additionally, she had a sister named Mary Josephine, so it seems rather unlikely (although not impossible) that she would also have been named Mary.

1870 - Jefferson Twp., Madison, Iowa[5] Researcher's Note: This is a possible candidate for the family in the 1870 census. The information is so wildly inaccurate that more evidence is needed to confirm that the family did indeed live in Madison County during this time period. If it is them, the info was likely conveyed by a neighbor or someone that didn't know them particularly well.

  • Paternal and maternal relationships are confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Duane Kelly and his 2nd cousin 1x removed DV. Their most-recent common ancestors are Duane's great-great grandparents and DV's great grandparents Hiram Toliver and Nancy Jane (Wright) Toliver. Based on sharing 129 cM across 6 segments, Ancestry places the 2nd cousin 1x removed relationship in the most likely category, with 50% probability.
  • Paternal relationship is further confirmed by a triangulated group on GEDmatch consisting of Duane Kelly, JE, and PS, who share a 7.5 cM segment on chromosome 4. The most-recent common ancestors shared by all three are John H Tolliver and Anna (Long) Tolliver.
