Biography
John Benjamin Tolkien was a piano teacher and tuner, as well as a music seller, but he went bankrupt in 1877, when he was described as "John Benjamin Tolkien, of High-street, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, Pianoforte and Music Seller". [1]
In the 1851 census, he is listed as living in Lichfield Road, Erdington, to the north of Birmingham with his second wife Jane, having moved from London in the early 1840's. The household included: John B. age 44, occupation music seller; Jane age 45; Louisa age 10; Emily age 12; John B. age 6; Maria Swinbourne age 27, occupation servant. [2]
Appeared in the 1861 England and Wales Census in Handsworth, Staffordshire, England. The surname was transcribed as Tolkin. The household included: John B. age 53, occupation music dealer; Mary J. age 25; Emily age 22; Louisa age 20; Arthur R. age 4; Mabel age 2; Ann Gough age 21, occupation domestic servant; Phebe Towel age 23, occupation domestic servant.
