John was born about 1800. He was tried in 1828 at Lent, Hereford Assizes, [1]
for housebreaking at Putson.

The sentence recorded was death

however he was sent to Van Diemens Land for life.

From the 31st of March until transportation he was held on a hulk ship at Chatham. Either the Ganymede[5]
or the Dolphin.

John departed England on 12 Aug 1828. He sailed to Tasmania on the Roslin Castle arriving 16 Dec 1828.

John married Janet Russell in 1837 after they had received permission to marry.

Sometime between 1847[11]
and 1853 the Tomkins family left Tasmania for Victoria.

They lived at Inverleigh and then Mt Elephant.

John also had land at Murchison.

In 1873 the family selected numerous blocks of 320 acres at Quaimong, New South Wales.

John passed away in 1877,

and is buried at Deniliquin, New South Wales.
