Biography

This profile was created for Emma Thompkins Lardner Gould who was the mother of Jemima Lardner, Sarah E. Lardner Webster, Louisa Gould Webster, Jane Gould Webster, and Anna Gould Truesdell. She was the wife of Richard Lardner by her first marriage. Her second marriage was to Joseph Gould. Neither her birth nor death can reasonably called certain. She was likely born in a place called Shelford, in Warwickshire England. However that place did not come up in Internet searches. Her death is also uncertain. There is a 1910 obituary from Sparta, Wisconsin for her husband Joseph Gould is discussed on his profile. That document puts her death year at 1860, but there are no primary sources to support her death in that year, or her subsequent life.

According to the 1851 British Census, Emma Tompkins Lardner Gould was born in 1822 or 1823 in Shelford, Warwickshire, England. [1] Based on a probable baptismal record she was the daughter of Elisha and Sarah Tompkins, and was christened 30 Mar 1823 in Birmingham. [2]

Emma married Richard Lardner on Christmas day 1844 in Saint Giles, Oxfordshire. [3] Jemima, their first child was born in late 1845 [4] Sarah was born in 1848, [5] at about the time of her father's death in October of that same year. [6]

Emma was remarried the following year (1849) to Joseph Gould. [7] Between 1850 and 1853 Emma gave birth to Louisa b. 1850, [8] Jane b. 1851, [9] and Anna b. 1852 or 3. Anna was born after the 1851 Census but before the family's emigration to the United States two years later.

The family sailed from Liverpool on the James Nesmith and arrived at the port of New York 19 Sep 1853. [10] They settled in Elgin, Illinois by the time of the 1860 US Census. [11]

Emma Gould is listed as alive and with the family in the 1860 Census. However, Joseph's 1910 obituary, which is discussed on his profile, states that Emma died in 1860. He remarried the following year. A large gap in the story of this family is that no death record has yet been found for Emma, or evidence of her life after 1860.
