John died on 16 Dec 1904 in Northwood, New South Wales, Australia aged 83. He is buried in Gore Hill Cemetery, St Leonards, New South Wales.

THE LATE MR. TOMLIN.^[4] One of the oldest identities of Northwood, Lane Cove River, has passed away in the person of Mr. John Tomlin, sen. The deceased gentleman would have reached the ripe age of 84 had he lived to Christmas Day. Mr. Tomlin had lived on the Lane Cove River for over 50 years, and leaves a widow, eight children, 34 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Alderman James Tomlin, of the Lane Cove Council, is the eldest son of the deceased.^[5]
