Charles was the 10th child born to William and Mary Tomlinson. He was born in Clinton Co, NY in 1846, probably at Keeseville where the family was living in the 1850 census. His father (born in Ireland) was a blacksmith.
In 1856, when Charles was 9, the family moved to the newly opened state of Iowa, ending up in Mitchell where Charles grew up. He enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was 18 when he enlisted on 29 March 1864 and served as a private in Company M, Iowa 7th Cavalry Regiment on 20 Apr 1864. He was mustered out on 22 Jun 1866 at Sioux City, IA.
He became a traveling salesman dealing in farm machinery. Sometime between 1885 and 1888, he moved to Kansas where he met and married Emma Charlotte Campbell on 19 Dec 1888. He was 42 and Emma 25. The couple had 4 children: 3 girls and one son.
Census records shows that Charles continued to work as a traveling salesman. He was living in Manhatten Kansas in Sept 1889 when he wrote an affadavit on behalf of Flint Boynton's request for a Civil War pension.
An affadavit by Charles E. Tomlinson of Manhatten, Riley Co, Kansas states that "from ten to twelve years before the late war of the rebellion, I first became well acquainted with and knew the claimant Flint S. Boynton, now of La Porte City, Black Hawk County, Iowa. He further states that he is related to Flint "by his marriage to my sister." Charles by his own description was "for a number of years a commercial traveler (traveling salesman?) and often visited the Boyntons in La Porte City." From Flint Boynton's Civil War records file at the Natl Archives.
A photo of Mary Ann with her brothers Charles and William in 1920 shows he was still alive. 1920 census shows him living in Topeka, KS, age 73.
