Biography

Miss Tompkins (see research note regarding first name) was born in the mid-1700s in an unknown colony and county (see research notes regarding date and place of birth). She married Robert Bumpas (-abt.1798), date and place unknown. The couple had at least two children, Samuel Bumpass Sr. (abt.1763-abt.1831) and John Bumpas (abt.1764-aft.1830). The date and place of death is unknown but husband Robert re-married in about 1786.

Research notes

  1. Profile adopted 4 Aug 2021.  There is plenty of scope for further research. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Robert Bumpas DID marry a lady named Tompkins who was the daughter of Samuel Tompkins.  The couple had at least two kids (Samuel and John).  Other than that, nothing is certain.  For sources, see the profile of Robert Bumpas (-abt.1798), primarily his will.
  3. The profile as adopted had Miss Tompkins born in 1753.  This is UNlikely as her oldest son was born in about 1763.  However, there is no source for the 1763 birth date of the son so nothing is certain.  The birth date of Sarah's second son has been calculated as between 1761 and 1765.  This is a further indication that Sarah was probably born before 1753.  The birth date of Sarah has been revised to 1747 but this is a weakly justified guess.
  4. It is VERY UNlikely that she was born in Cumberland County, North Carolina.  Cumberland County was first formed in 1754 (FWIW).  It is unknown where Sarah's father was born where he lived or where he died, so no better guess can be made.
  5. The first name "Sarah" is unsourced.  The will of Robert Bumpas does not refer to her by name, only " ... relinquish unto my two sons Samuel & John Bumpass all the right claim & interest I may have to a part of the Estate of Samuel Tompkins Father to my first wife their Mother."  The first name "Sarah" seems to be a common assumption made in several genealogies but it is unproven.
  6. The profile, as adopted, had a single 'source' which had been split and mangled in the usual manner by the .ged import.  The essence of this source was "Jackson, Ron V., Accelerated Indexing Systems, comp. Title: North Carolina Census, 1790-1890 Publication: Name: Ancestry.com".  It is unclear whether this is intended to refer to a State census of North Carolina or to one or more federal censuses.
  7. No Samuel Tompkins could be found as a head of household in North Carolina in the 1790 federal census.
  8. The profile, as adopted, had a statement that Sarah's residence in 1777 was in the St. James District, Caswell County, North Carolina and citing the aforementioned single 'source'.  No known (to me) censuses were taken in North Carolina prior to the State census of North Carolina, 1784-1787 so this reference is unclear.  Nevertheless, further research in Caswell County would be warranted.
