Most recent (2016) research by Alicia Crane Williams: John Tompkins 1609-1681 in: Early New England Families, indicates the LNAB of his wife Margaret remains unknown.

Recent research (see below) indicates that this John Tomkins was not from Edlesborough and his wife Margaret was not Margaret Goodman. Most genealogies will, however, include those two items, referring to the same person in Massachussets, but leaving out the contemporary John Tomkins who remained in Edlesborough, England. Anderson (2012, p 71) reports:

"Some secondary sources, as well as Torrey's Marriage Index, state that John Tompkins, son of this immigrant, married at Edlesborough, Bucks, on 27 August 1632 Margaret Goodman [Farr Anc 282]. This marriage is found in the Edlesborough register, and John Tompkins, son of Ralph, did have wife Margaret. However, there was a Tompkins family long established in Edlesborough, including a John Tompkins who married [blank] Hopkins in late 1609, who could have been father of the John who married there in 1632. (Edlesborough is about ten miles northeast of Wendover, and must be carefully distinguished from Ellesborough, which is immediately adjacent to Wendover on the southwest.)

Also this John Tompkins was a different person than the John Tompkins of Concord who settled in Eastchester. The two are confused in traditional genealogies because of a speculation by James Savage (A genealogical dictionary of the first settlers of New England).

Regarding the above:

When the inventory was taken, the following children were named: Nathaniel Tomkins, John Tomkins, Sarah Tomkins, Elizabeth, Deborah, Mary and Priscilla. [4]

I looked at the Inventory and the final release and those names are not listed. On the inventory a mention is made about the widow Mary Read.

The Final release of John Tompkins Sr's probate did not come till 1707. By that time his grandson Nathaniel has wrapped up the estate after it falling to him after the death of John Jr his father. At that time there is a mention of a claim by the daughter of John Tompkins Senior by the name of Deborah.

Based on marriages and associations in other parts of my family this was a Protestant family. Mary Tomkin born 1649 who married John Felton asked to leave the First Church in Salem then formed Middle Precinct later known as Peabody. All of this consistent with the group that was first Roger Conant then Capt John Endicott. Roger Conant in 1626 went to "Naumkeag" which was later known as Peabody and is in Salem.

John Tompkins first asked to be an inhabitant Jan 20, 1636. Which would be in alignment with sailing on the True Love. Ralph Tompkins received 10 acres Nov 23, 1642. Being 25 yrs old I think it's totally possible that John was not listed on the manifest because he was a crew member. Since there was no son "John" who became executor of Ralph's estate it's obvious it was John Sr. Also hypothetical birth dates with hypothetiical locations of the children of Ralph do not even coincide with the ages on the manifest PLUS there are children that didn't even sail over.

Sharon, were you looking at this probate in Volume 3? https://archive.org/details/probaterecordsof03dowg/page/426/mode/2up

Those names do appear on page 428. His relict Mary is listed and her son (by previous husband) Jacob Read although the inventory doesn't actually state that she had a prior husband, children etc.

Were you actually able to find the Essex quarterly court records vol 35 holding the original notes? The copy on familysearch here https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/viewer/167054/?offset=0#page=140&viewer=picture&o=search&n=0& also seems to be a later extrapolation.

Brad. Thank you for that. However I was looking at the original documents. That transcribed that you have is for entries for the deaths of John Sr and John Jr.

John Sr's inventory mentions Mary in Vol 302 page 7 John Jr who died by July 13, 1706 and is in Vol 309 page 61. That explains the names of children that John Sr did not have. John Jr's children were Margaret b 1672 John b 1674 Rebecca 1676 Nathaniel b 1678 Elizabeth 1680 Mary 1686. The only Priscilla I know of is a child of Nathan the grandchild handling the probates. Nathan's children were Nath, Samuel, Eliz, Mary, Marcy, Priscilla, Sarah, Rebecca and Hannah. https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/412735?availability=Family%20History%20Library

After piecing this together I am satisified that John Sr's father was indeed Ralph who came on the True Love.

Please see the update in the G2G thread that affects this profile: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/291009/help-needed-sort-out-profile-that-combines-people-duplicates?show=1047507#c1047507

In a few days I plan to disconnect members of this line, their spouses, merge duplicates to the MA line, and create new members that are missing. If anyone has any input on this, please join the discussion at the link above.

As far as I can tell this profile is correct according to the most recent research, and I don't understand what might be disconnected?

Hi Chris, the profiles that are being most looked at are highlighted in the G2G post that is linked above. I just posted the same profile comments to each profile in the line to let other profile managers know about the discussion. Primarily, we are looking to deconflate the New York, Conneticut, and Mass. lines. There are many duplicate profiles that have wrong parents/children, etc. Any change to any specific profile will be posted to that profile's comments before any change is made so that if any PM who isn't following the G2G discussion can be aware and raise any objections before said changes are made.

Wife Elizabeth should be removed.

I have sourced and added correct 2nd wife Mary. See her profile for details. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-433275

Margaret's LNAB should be changed to unknown.

His death date is corrected to match SalemVR and his probate records. See SalemVR and Essex Co. Probate Vol. 3 p. 426-7

Again: Keeping unmerged match until issue with Tompkins-1618 (who can't be related to the Tompkins of Salem) is resolved.
Tompkins-1619 and Tompkins-106 are not ready to be merged because: Tompkins-1619 has a son, Nathaniel, who was born in Fairfield. Tompkins-106 lived in Salem until his death and all his children were born there. Tompkins-106 and Tompkins-1619 can't be the same person, unless the details in Tompkins-1619 are wrong.
Tompkins-1619 and Tompkins-106 appear to represent the same person because: most info is the sam, only.Birth dates differ.
