Matilda TOMPKINS b: 18 MAY 1810 in Carter Co, TN, USA
[1] John (Scot) and Nancy (Matilda) were married by Samuel Younglove J.P. in Kentucky.
John was buried with his wife Nancy (Matilda) in Sisney Graveyard in Gainsville, Ozark County, Missouri. This is located near Gooldys Spring creek. Reports say that the cemetery is not kept up and will soon if not already be obliterated.
John Sisney listed his birthplace as North Carolina in about 1797 but the first verifiable record of his existence is his marriage to Matilda Tompkins in Christian county Kentucky in 1829.
One child was born to John and Matilda before they moved to Macon county, Illinois where their second child was born. Then they moved to Warren County, Illinois where four more children were born. Sometime before 1850 John and Matilda packed their belongings once more and crossed the Mississippi to settle in Schulyer county, Missouri where their last three children were born. But John and Matilda did not find the home they sought in Schulyer county either. They moved two more times in the state of Missouri before they settled on the southern border of Missouri in Ozark county.
BURIAL: THE SISNEY GRAVE YARD by S.C.Turnbo Among the older farms in Ozark County, Mo. is the Sisney Place on Goubeys Spring Creek. I am told that John Sisney was the first man that did any work here to amount to anything. Away back in the fifties Tommy Norris and Nory Miller held revival meetings here for several years and a free will Baptist Church was organized here called the White River Church. The converts were Baptized in the creek near where the services were held. Situated on this farm is an old time grave yard where a number of old time people are at rest. The cemetery is on the slope of a hill where it is nearly clear of rock with a few pretty cedars standing scattered over the ground. On the 19th of February 1906 the writer in company with George Mahan visited this grave yard to note down some of the names of the older people whose dust is moldering here. I am told that Lucinda Hall daughter of Joe Hall who was accidentally shot and killed by her brother Bill (Bully) Hall was the first internment here. I am told that Mr. Joe Hall was living on this land when the unfortunate accident occurred. The following are a few of the oldest people who are buried here. John Sisney who died September 4, 1880 was born in 1784. Mrs. Matilda Sisney his wife a very old lady is buried here. W.J. (Bill) Sisney born January 18, 1834 died May 8,1903. This last named was a son of John Sisney. - Charles S. Gooly (Gooldy)
