Griffin Hilliker Tompkins was born 14 sept 1822. July 22 1847, he is listed as a School teacher of Yorktown in the Eastern state journal, pg 3. He married Amelia Purdy about 1849. His daughter Lousia was born in 1850 and died around a year old. He was a soldier in the Civil war and about this time he changed his name to Haviland Tompkins. in 1861, he was a member of 25th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company K. in 1862 he was part of the 5th state militia of Missouri. in 1863 he was part of the 3rd battalion, 14th Illinois.in 1864, Major Tompkins returned from Captivity and was part of the Stoneman Raid to Macon. 12 Jan 1865 he married Sally Shackleford in Kentucky. In 1866 he was part of a murder trial of three people in Anderson Prision. By 1868, he was practicing law in Indian Territory. and in 1879 started collecting his military pension. In 1890, his daughter from his second marriage finds him as he had deserted the family long ago. In 107 he files a patent on improvents to Road Grader equipment. He dies 29 Nov 1907, but in July of 1908 his daughter finds out she is his heir, and it is in newspapers everywhere.He is buried alone in Faifield, Wayne county, Illinois under the name Haviland.
