Pete emigrated from France with his family to the United States when he was about six years old. [1]
The Toponce family lived in Belfort, France. In late April 1846, Peter Lee Toponce, a farmer, his wife Mary, and their young children, Alexander, Peter, Chester, and Julia A. left the Port of Havre, France and sailed to America. They arrived in Battery Park, New York on 22 June 1846. They first settled in Buffalo, New York. During the Civil War, Chester and his brother Peter, both Union Soldiers, died during the last months of the war.[2]
In 1860, Pete Toponce, 22, born about 1838 in France, lived with the family of Redell Payne (age 43), and one other man, in Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York. [3]
Pete died in the Civil War. [4] Peter and his brother Chester both were killed in the Civil War. [5]
