Biography

Lieutenant John Torry was born on June 23, 1673[1], the son of William Torrey and Deborah Greene of Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts[2] [3] [4]

On 26 December 1700, he married Mary Symmes[2] [5] [3] [4]. Their children included

  1. William, the eldest[6] [4], born September 28, 1701[7], who married Bethiah Bass
  2. John, the second son[6] [4], born September 30, 1703[8]
  3. Samuel[6] [4], born Feb 11, 1706[9], who married Abigail Snowdon and Martha Strickland
  4. Josiah[6] [4], born April 1, 1707[10], who married Ann Bass
  5. Mary[6] [4], born October 11, 1711[11], who married David Lovell, Samuel Kingman and John Reed
  6. Ann[6] [4], born May 28, 1715[12], who married James Humphrey

John Torrey died 7 Jan 1729/30 in Weymouth, Suffolk, Massachusetts[3]. His inventory, taken after his death, mentions his estate in Weymouth valued at E1,069 16s. 7d. and a house in Boston valued at E455 in occupation of his two sons. His son William Torrey was administrator and inherited the house in Boston. His brothers and sisters, ( John, Samuel, Josiah, Mary and Ann Torrey) received, L42 17s. 3d. apiece on 1 Mar. 1730. The second son John inherited the estate in Weymouth, and paid his brothers and sisters, (William, eldest son, Samuel, Josiah, Mary and Ann, E42 17s. 3d, [6]

Mary died February 14, 1758[13] [3]

1 March 7 , 1698 . “ Voted that John Torrey , Tanner , for the encouragement of his trade shall have twelve pole of land joining to his fathers land out of the towns commons for a tanyard so long as there shall be use for it for that trade in this Town . "

March 7 , 1715 . “ At the said Meeting John Torrey , James Humphrey , Joseph Torrey , Ezra Whitmarsh , Enoch Lovell , Ebenezer Pratt & divers others their partners who had agreed to begin a fishing trade to Cape-sables requested of the town that they might have that piece or parcel of land at the mouth of the fore river in the northerly part of Weymouth called and known by the name of Hnnts Hill and the low land and Beach adjoining thereunto , that is so much as they shall noed for the management of said fishing trade . The Town after consideration thereof Voted that they should have the said land and Beach to manage their fishing trade . "[14]
