Dispute: The LNAB of RIchard Sylvester's wife Naomi has been speculated as Torrey., and she has been linked as a child to Phillip and Alice (Richards) Torrey, Most recent research show Philip and Alice had no daughter named Naomi. See: NEHGR: 163: 2009: 280. See the bulletin board discussion and links. See also: Frederic C. Torrey, The Torrey Families and Their Children in America, 1.342-44; he gives her husband as John Lowell (see 1.35) and argues that Savage is mistaken. Recent research

Research Notes

Claimed parents/baptism: FindAGrave, Geni.com, FamilySearch, without providing a source claims that Naomi was Naomi Torrey, bp 10 March 1615, Keysham, Somerset, the daughter of Phillip and Alice (Richards) Torrey. Searches for the baptism record on FamilySearch, Ancestry, and FreeRegUK, returned no results (As of 8.6.2023). There was a Naomi (Torrey) Lowell (1641-1694), the granddaughter of Phillip. Additional evidence would be needed to connect Naomi, wife of Richard Silvester with this data.

It appears the birth date in the birth data field is an artifact from the profile's early days that we can now remove. Maybe this was entered along with the now disproved parents?

It seems like a birth estimate of abt 1614 in England would be consistent with her marriage estimate and first known child born in Dec 1633 - I would vote to keep that estimate in the data field.

Removed parents. See also: NEHGR: 163: 2009: 278-80:

Children of Philip and Alice Torrey - no Naomi.

You convinced me, unknown is ok with me too.

I'd go with unknown and remove the parents.

The History of Scituate says he married 'a sister of William Torrey no first name, and that his widow at death was Naomi. https://books.google.com/books?id=DL0OAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA348&dq=richard+sylvester:naomi+torrey&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjlmfHVy73dAhXOVN8KHTAWCF84ChDoAQhJMAc#v=onepage&q=Sylvester&f=false

Appparently - sister of William came from Savage's Gen Dict - All of which is discussed in NEHGR: 85: 1931: p. 250. https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image?volumeId=11698&pageName=250&rId=236564584

Julia, these are old references which have been shown to be wrong by newer, more modern research. The name needs to be changed if there are no primary sources to support the LNAB.

I History of Scituate, Massachusetts, from its

more research needs to be made before removing Torrey as her surname. This source also refers to Naomi Torrey to be Richard's wife "First Settlement to 1831, Samuel Deane, (Boston: James Loring)"

One last chance to speak up. Changing surname to Unknown in a few days. Objections?
posted on Unknown-440368 (merged) by Anne B
From the reading of Anderson and the Torrey reference given, her parents need to be disconnected and her LNAB changed to Naomi Unknown.

What is the source for adding Phillip as father to Naomi? Discounting any user-submitted material at find-a-grave, of course.
posted on Unknown-440368 (merged) by [Living Sylvester]
Torrey-252 and Torrey-2 appear to represent the same person because: please merge with Phillip as Naomi's father
posted on Unknown-440368 (merged) by Julia (Baldwin) Howard
I would concur with the idea that Phillip is the father. Not a problem for you to go ahead and do the merge.
