Their first child, Richard, was born in Tottenham, England. They immigrated to the Colonies in 1642 where they farmed in Hempstead, New York. Four other children, Deborah, Henry, Peter and Jon were born in Hempstead. Most of the Totten family origins can be traced back to Edward and Joan Meade Totten, of Tottenham, England. I leave to my wife Lovinee (or Sovinee) ?250 and two negro girls, and two cows, one horse, saddle and bridle, a bed, and 1/2 of household goods. I leave to my sister, Rebecca Brooks, ?120, "but if she should die before she gits it, then to her children." I leave to Thomas Southard, my sister's son, ?10, and a horse and 1/2 of my apparel. "I will give ?5 to Trinity Church at Fishkill, to buy a Bell." I leave to Phebe Weekes, my sister's daughter, ?5. To Jeremiah Cooper, ?5. Page 254.--In the name of God, Amen, February 6, 1766, I, GILBERT TOTTEN, of Cortlandt's Manor, in Westchester County, farmer, being sick. My executors are to sell my negro man "Robin" and my negro woman "Susa" soon after my decease, and the money used to pay funeral expenses and debts. I leave to my wife the whole use of my farm that I now live on, for bringing up my children until my eldest son Samuel is of age, and then he is to have the use of one quarter. And my wife Mary is to have the use of the rest until my second son Joseph is of age, and then he is to have the use of one quarter. When my son Edward is of age, he is to have the use of one quarter. My wife is to have the use of the rest, and the best room in my house. After her decease my three sons are to have all the farm. I leave to my eldest son Henry my silver pike, which was given to me by my beloved father, William Fowler, in his will, and I leave to my youngest son Newbury my (unreadable) which was given to me by my father in his will. I leave to my daughter, Free love Fowler, 1/3 of movable estate, "and if it should not turn out ?40, my son Henry shall make it up." GEORGE BROWN, (son of Andrew Brown,) lived on Stony Hill, where John W. Hand now lives. His wife's name was Elizabeth Martin, of Woodbridge. She died, 6th August, 1777, aged 25 years; and he married(???) Wood, a sister of Samuel Wood, of Dayton, and also a sister of Esther, the wife of Jonathan Totten. He had children: (2d Generation.)

NATHANIEL DAY, (son of John Day,) had nine children: (4th Generation.) : 1. Rachel, who married David Peppers. -- 2. Joseph married, 31st July, 1788, Patty Totten, daughter of Samuel Totten -- 9. Mary married Jesse V. Douglass, and had children: A. Elizabeth, who married Andrew W. Brown, son of Thompson. [See Brown.] -- B. Jemima, who married Joseph W. Totten, son of Jonathan.

BENJAMIN HAND lived on Long Hill, where Samuel Stanbury formerly lived, and owned the farm lately owned by John Littell, and now owned by Richard Ayre and his son William. (2d Generation.) He married Phebe Wood, sister of Samuel Wood, who went to Dayton, Ohio. She was also a sister of the wife of George Brown, and of Esther, the wife of Jonathan Totten.

THOMAS D. JONES, (son of Luther,) and Hetty High, lived in Sterling Valley, and had children: (3d Generation.): 1. Martha Bebout, who married Cornelius Totten, son of John, and had children: A. Georgiana Totten -- B. Matilda Totten, who died in infancy. -- C. Matilda married James White, and had children: William White andAnne Eliza White, and then they went to Savannah, Georgia. -- C. Margaret married Jacob Leonard, son of Samuel, of Sterling Valley, and had children: A. James Leonard; 2. William Leonard. -- Mary, who died of consumption, 28th September, 1850. -- D. Wealthy Anne -- E. Emma.

JAMES TOTTEN was probably the son of Sylvanus Totten, who lived in this neighborhood in 1765. He lived on the north side of Long Hill, where Noah Williams lately lived; he married Hester Propo, who died 7th June, 1773; he died 7th May, 1774; they had children: 1. Sarah, who married, 16th March, 1767, Moses Blancher. -- 2. David married, 25th January, 1775, Sarah Pierson. -- 3. John married Rhoda Marsh, of Rahway, sister of Daniel Marsh.

JOHN TOTTEN died 11th September, 1810, aged 56 years. Rhoda his widow died 20th January, 1835, aged 82 years.

DAVID TOTTEN, (son of James,) and Sarah Pierson lived in Sterling's Valley, and had children: 1. Mary, who married Israel Brant. --2. Elizabeth married Mr. Boylan. -- 3. SAMUEL TOTTEN, (brother of James Totten 1st) lived a little south of the corner store south of the church, and kept a tavern there. Martha Totten married, 31st July, 1788, Joseph Day, [See Day. -- 3. Jonathan Totten married, 15th October, 1792, Esther Wood, daughter of Jeremiah Wood.

JONATHAN TOTTEN, (son of Samuel,) and Esther Wood. Mr. Jonathan Totten died 24th February, 1837, aged 68 years. They had children: 1. Jane Totten, who married John McClasky Schureman, son of John, and had children: A. Jonathan Schureman, who married Keziah -- B.. Samuel Schureman married Cornelia Dickerson, daughter of Philemon. Jane then died, and Mr. Schureman married again, Mrs. Melick, who had a son, Abraham Melick, who married Eliza Schureman, daughter of Samuel Schureman, brother of John McClasky. By this 2d wife, J. McC. Schureman had a son, Leonard Schureman, who is a stone cutter, in Morristown. 3. Henrietta Totten.

Nancy, who married Jacob Nixon, and had children: 1. Pamelia Nixon, who married Mr. Dunn; lives in Morristown, and keeps a large milliners' shop -- 2. Harriet Jane Nixon married Aaron Hedden, son of Thomas -- 3. Jeremiah Nixon married Hannah Price, daughter of Rice Price: live in Roxbury, Morris county -- 4. Betsey Nixon, who lived in New York, and died 31st Jan. 1852, unmarried -- 5. Esther Nixon, who married Ezra Williams, son of Noah; lives in New-York, and have no children - -- 6. Abraham Morrel Nixon, who died 20th Dec. 1827, aged 27 years -- 7. Joseph Wood Nixon married, 31st July 1823, Jemima Doug las, daughter of Jesse V. Douglas, of Springfield.

JEREMIAH TOTTEN, (son of Jonathan,) and Hannah Price, had children: 1. Samuel, who married Sarah Anne Osborn, daughter of John, and had children: A. John Osborn Totten, and others -- 2. Jonathan Totten, born 1st Sept. 1821, married, 22d July 1843, Mariah Schureman, daughter of Samuel, have no children. [See Scudder.] -- 3. William Totten -- 4. Jane Totten -- 5. Benjamin Totten -- 6. Abigail Totten -- 7 Agnes Totten -- 8. Hannah Totten -- 9. Anne Totten -- 10. Edwin Totten.

JOSEPH W. TOTTEN, (son of Jonathan,) and Jemima Douglas, had children: 1. Abraham Morrel Totten -- 2. William Pierson Totten -- 3. Mary Elizabeth Totten -- 4. Hetty Mariah Totten who married (???), and died at 19 years -- 5. Charles Jackson Totten -- 6. John Totten -- 7. Jonathan.
