Lafford (Lafferd on this tombstone) )was born July 26, 1795 in Schenectady, Schenectady, New York to Joseph Totton and Anna (Van Leuven) Totton. He was baptized on December 17, 1796 in the Dutch Reformed Church.[1]
It seems likely that they had moved to Illinois in the 1820s since his son Henry (see below) is buried in Adams Co., Illinois in 1825. Legal records say that on May 16, 1836, he purchased a tract of land in Illinois.[2] It looks as though he purchased more land in 1840.[3]
Lafford married Maria N. Van Schoonhoven and they had a family:
Ann Eliza (1823-?) and her older brother Joseph were both baptized on August 30, 1823 in the Presbyterian Church, no location given. There is no record of Ann Eliza after this.[5]
Henry Totten (Mar-Sep, 1825), baptized in the Presbyterian Church on September 18, 1825 (no location given). Probably died at 6 mo, 10 days in Adams Co., Illinois per "Cemeteries of Adams Co., [Illinois] Vol. 1." published by the Great River Genealogical Society (see his FAG, following).[6][7] and
Marco Bozzaris Totten (1844-1915).[8] In 1850, Lafford and Maria were living in Adams Co., Illinois.[9] He passed away on August 11, 1854 in Plainville, Adams, Illinois.[10] Maria died in Plainville, Adams, Illinois on May 6, 1874, almost twenty years later, and is buried next to her husband.[11]
