Biography

Parents, Birth:
 Telesphore Toups, Sr. was born sometime after 1794[1] in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana to Gaspard Casper Toups and Genevieve Ambroise Haydel.[2]

Military Service:
 Telesphore joined the military around the age of about 18 and fought in the war of 1812.[3] His enlistment record shows his name spelled “Tallesfor” rather than Telesphore but he can be found in the Index to Louisiana Soldiers During the War of 1812[4] and in the list of soldiers who fought in the Battle of New Orleans.[5] Both sources also list Telesphore’s brother Ambroise Toups, his cousin (Paul) Frederick Toups, and many others who would marry into his immediate and extended family (see Additional Information section below).

Marriage:
 Upon returning from the War of 1812, Telesphore married Marie Carmelite Baudoin on 7 Jul 1818.[6][7]
