Biography

Bernard was born in 1824. [1]

He is the son of Elisha Town and Nancy Lawson.

He apparently married some one named Catherine H.White before 1860 as they appear together in that Federal Census with her daughter Eliza White.[2] She was not listed with him in 1900 so she had apparently died.

In the 1850 US Census, he is listed as living in the household of Charles Wilson with Wilson's wife and daughter. Bernard and two other young men as well as the other men's apparent grandmother appear. However, since record has no relationships noted, a lot is guesswork. [3]

1870 US Census has Bernard at age 46 living is his own household with a female 41 years old and an elderly couple.[4]

The 1880 Federal Census lists only Bernard and his wife Catherine but does list his occupation as a bricklayer. [5]

In 1900 Federal Census in Montpelier VT, he was listed as being 76 and an inmate in the household of Chauncey Murray. The record lists him as not being able to read or write. It seems likely since this is a household, that he was actually live help.[6]

He died in 1903 and was buried in Cutler Cemetery in East Montpelier VT.[7]
