Mary married Col. Augustine Warner, Gent., of Norwich, Norfolk,[2] before 13 May 1638[1] in England.[3] Augustine was likely the son of Thomas Warner and Elizabeth Sotherton.[3] He had immigrated to Virginia aboard the Hopewell in 1628,[1] at age 17, and it is thought that he returned to England at some point between 1635 and 1638 and married Mary. No record is found to determine the date of their marriage.[3] They had one son and two daughters:
Sarah, married Mary's nephew, Lawrence Towneley[1][3]
Mary Warner is on a list of persons who immigrated to Virginia in 1638 arriving with Capt. Augustine Warner.[6] Mary and Augustine settled first at New Poquoson, York County, Virginia and later removed to Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia,[1] where her husband built the grand estate along the Severn River, near Chesapeake Bay.[3] The land on which Warner Hall was built was called “Austin’s Desire” in a 1642 land patent. The six hundred-acre plantation was granted to Augustine Warner as headright for bringing twelve settlers across the Atlantic Ocean to the Jamestown Settlement.[7] Augustine later served as a Burgess for York in 1652 and for Gloucester in 1655 and was a councillor of Virginia from 1659-1674.[1]
Mary may have returned home to Stone Edge for a visit before her father's death in 1654/5 as her name is listed on the headright list for her husband's grant of 26 October 1652.[3]
Mary Towneley died on 11 August 1662.[1] She is buried at the graveyard at Warner Hall in Gloucester County, Virginia.[8] Her tombstone reads:[9]
Mary Warner ye wife of Augus tine Warner Esq. was Born 15th of May 1614 and Dyed ye 11th Day
of August 1662
Her husband, Augustine Warner, died 24 December 1674 and was also buried at Warner Hall.[1] Today, the Warner Hall Cemetery in Gloucester, Virginia, is maintained by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.[7]
Let me start with, I reviewed every "tree" provided by Rod Carty and found NO sources for a marriage to James Miller. The only record found was a marriage of James Miller to "Mary" last name unknown. Robin Lee 15:20, 17 November 2016 (EST)
There are many online trees that imply that Mary Townely was married to James Miller. By the dates available it seems impossible. As far as I can see they were individually the grandparents to the children of Col. John III "The Councilor" Lewis and Elizabeth Warner.
Mary Townely 1614 – 1662 was married in 1638 to Augustine I Warner 1610 – 1674 and they were the parents of Augustine II, who was the father of Elizabeth Warner who married Col. John III "The Councilor" Lewis.
James Miller 1610/20 – 1657 who was the father of Isabella Miller 1640 – 1704 who married in 1666 to Major John II Lewis 1633 – 1689 who were the parents of Col. John III "The Councilor" Lewis who married Elizabeth Warner.

Mary (Towneley) Warner is listed in Magna Carta Ancestry (vol. I, pp xxiii-xxix) as a Gateway Ancestor and is in a Richardson-documented trail to Magna Carta Surety BaronRobert de Ros (vol. IV, pages 204-207 TOWNELEY). This trail is outlined below.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
Magna Carta Trails
Badged Richardson-documented trail to Ros (MCA IV:204-207 TOWNELEY):
The incorrect husband has been removed, there are NO sources that indicate that she married James Miller. The confusion is with the later generations where Augustine Jr's daughter marries into the Miller family.
Towneley-43 and Towneley-1 appear to represent the same person because: Mary Towneley's 2nd husband was Col. Augustine Warner, Sr. Her first husband was James Miller. Same birth and death dates
Towneley-1 and Townley-276 do not represent the same person because: I understand all the poorly sourced trees on the web that would like to connect these two. But, if you look at all those trees, they have the woman married to both men and having children with borth men at the same time. Also, the marriage and life of Mary Townley and Augustine Warner is very well documented and she was never married to another man.
All of the unsourced trees cited for the merge, have this woman married to both men at the same time and having children from both men at the same time. Clearly not the same person.
Towneley-1 and Towneley-43 do not represent the same person because: Not the same woman, Towneley-1 is well documented and she never married someone named Miller
Towneley-43 and Towneley-1 appear to represent the same person because: These all show the Mary Towneley who married Augustine Warner also married James Miller.
Hi PMs! Just wanted to let you know that I'll be working on Mary Towneley's lineage back to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Ros. Let me know if you have any questions : )
INformation has come to light that Augustine Warner-97 and Mary Towneley did not have a daughter Isabella. See her profile. John Lewis married a different Isabella. Hearing no objections I will disconnect.
