Daniel Coleman Townes was born about 1840 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to Stephen Coleman Townes and Catherine Williams Townes. His parents were wed in Pittsylvania on January 31, 1815.

The 1850 census shows Daniel in the home of parents Stephen(1798 Va) and Catherine(1793 Va) in Pittsylvania. Siblings in the home:

  2. Rebecca 1836
  3. Stephen 1838
  4. DANIEL TOWNES 1840

Daniel Townes, he married Martha Y. Oliver in Pittsylvania in 1859. A birth record for July 1, 1861 show they had a daughter, Annetta M. D. Townes. Martha died on July 24, 1861.

Daniel C. Townes was the man who organized Company A of the 38th Virginia Infantry,, and was the first Company Commander when the Civil War began.

Three of Daniel's sisters would marry men who fought with the 38th Virginia. His sister Rebecca married Jesse L. Carter, who was a Private in Company A. Daniel's sister Sarah married Robert W. Carter, and he would become a Lieutenant in the 53rd Virginia Infantry, but would go to the 38th later in the war. Sister Martha married Harrison Lee Hodges, who initially fought with the 57th Infantry, but like Robert Carter, joined the 38th later on.

Captain Daniel Coleman Townes was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Brother-in-law Jesse Carter was wounded. Daniel's other brother-in-laws Robert W. Carter and Harrison L. Hodges would join the 38th in 1864.

Thus far no record found determining fate of Daniel's daughter Annetta.
