Samuel Townsend's first wife's surname is unknown. It isn't recorded in their marriage record.[1] The latter has a dual year (1693/4, which is left out in all of the transcriptions and indexes), this date being in the Julian/Gregorian calendar year overlap, so on the current calendar it was 1694. She wasn't Elizabeth Mellins, who was previously claimed to be Samuel's first wife in this bio. Elizabeth Mellins married Thomas Barlow in 1681. She and Elizabeth (?) Townsend were born in the same year, however, and apparently this and the married name of Samuel's second wife led to this confusion. Samuel's second wife is correct - Elizabeth (Bucknam) Mellins. She was the sister-in-law of Elizabeth (Mellins) Barlow.
Samuel Townsend married Elizabeth Bucknam, widow of John Mellins, April 7, 1701 in Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[2]
