Mrs. Georgia Merrill, who would have been 75 years of age Nov. 22, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 14, with heart failure while shopping in a Pittsburgh, Pa., department store, where she had been visiting her son and daughter, and had her plane reservation made to return to her home Friday the 17th. She resided with a son, Clifford W. Merrill, Catonsville, Baltimore, Md., since the death of her husband, Stephen Homer "Pet" Merrill, in January of 1928. Mrs. Merrill was in good health at the time of her sudden unexpected death, her only affliction being arthritis, with which she suffered severely at times, but insisted on keeping active. The day before her death (Monday, Sept. 13) she picked tomatoes, corn and beans from her son's garden, and grapes from her daughter's arbor; and she canned all of them and made grape jelly and grape-butter for them both.
Georgia Merrill's relatives on her side of the family were the Townsends, Lockharts, and Burtons, and she was the youngest daughter of the George Townsends, who left Elizabeth in the early 1900s. Her mother died at childbirth of the baby boy, Fred, and the eldest brother being Frank Townsend. Her oldest sister, Claudia E. Dent, died this past year and her next sister, Grace Piles, a year ago, and with Mrs. Merrill's death Sept. 14, this is the last of children, brothers and sisters in her family. Her husband's only living brother at this time is Lawrence V. Merrill of Parkersburg.
Georgia Merrill was born in 1879, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Townsend of Elizabeth, and in 1898 was married to Stephen H. "Pet" Merrill. He was a carpenter, and they at one time kept a general store at Elizabeth where five of their children were born, and the youngest, Geraldine, was later born in Akron. The Merrills went to Akron in 1914 where they resided until Mr. Merrill's death in 1928.
Her remains were taken to Turner's Funeral Home, Wilkinsburg, Pa., where she was held for view of her friends until late Thursday when her body was sent to Akron, Ohio, where funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Sept. 17, at Long's Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. R. Rusch of the Community Church. Her interment was beside her husband, "Pet" Merrill, in Glendale Cemetery, Akron. Her daughter, Mina Louise "Mollie" Merrill, who preceded her in death, is buried in the same cemetery, while another daughter who preceded her in death, Anna L. Merrill Siddle, is interred in Detroit, Michigan.
She is survived by her eldest son, Clifford W. Merrill, with whom she had made her home in Baltimore, and Cecil M. Merrill; and a daughter, Geraldine Hovis, of Pittsburgh.
