Research Notes

Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed that Mary Townsend (1622-1668), wife of Robert Stith (1606-1654), was daughter of Thomas Townsend and Mary Newgate (immigrants to Massachusetts). But research reveals no evidence that this couple had a daughter named Mary who married Stith & moved to Virginia. If you have sources to support this relationship, please share them.

Sources

  1. See The Stith Family: A Living History, by C.R. Stith, which notes that there is no evidence that John Stith - the immigrant progenitor of Virginia's Stith family - was born in Kirkham Parish, surmising that his family had moved, possibly to London, prior to his birth: "Dr. Christopher Johnston (1856-19--) of Baltimore, Maryland (himself a Stith descendant) stated as follows in an article written in Volume 21W(1), William and Mary Quarterly 'The Stith family appears to have been long settled in the parish of Kirkham, in Lancashire and both the parish registers and the wills show that the Stiths were quite numerous in that locality. A careful search, however, fails to show any unmistakable trace of the Virginia immigrant, and it is probable that his immediate family had moved elsewhere, perhaps to London.'"

Mary Newgate - Newgate-1, Newgate-13, and many more - and Thomas Townsend Townsend-133 do not appear to have had a daughter named Mary who married Stith & moved to Virginia. Do you have additional sources?

Townsend-3414 and Townsend-203 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse; it looks like she was born in England and immigrated with her husband[1]

Townsend-2395 and Townsend-203 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year, same husband. Please merge. Thanks.
