Estherlet was born about 1847 in Connecticut.
She was the daughter of Union Army widow Emeline and Civil War soldier Ralsey R. Townsend of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
