Lonely was born about 1856 in Connecticut.
He was the son of Union Army widow Emeline and Civil War soldier Ralsey R. Townsend of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
In 1860, he is attending school, probably in or near Springfield, Massachusetts.
