As for a Reynolds and Townsend connection, while searching, I found a census record that has a few Reynolds families listed in town with Samuel Townsend. He lived in Athens Twp, Athens, Ohio during the 1840 census with males: 1 under 5, 2 aged 5 to under 10, 1 between 10 and 15, and himself, age 30-40. One of the boys 5-10 could be Samuel Jr. Females consisted of 2 under 5, 1 aged 10 to 15, and wife aged 30-40. Also living there were Justice Reynolds, sharing the home with likely aged mother and several free colored persons. Also in town was Micle Reynolds, and E. Raynolds. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YB4-SSL?i=12&cc=1786457&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXHY8-ZJY
Hi Connie, My Samuel D Townsend was born in Ohio but died while serving in the Iowa 9th infantry unit. (He died of soldier's heart after a strenuous 3 day march in Arkansas' freezing rain.) He and his brother and sisters migrated to Iowa in the 1850's. I have documentation from him down to my generation. Yes, it was my male cousin who took the Y-DNA test where we discovered that we are descendants of Robert Townsend, Samuel's grandfather (b.1756 d. 1846) History from other family members suggest Samuel's father was Robert/Robertson/Robinson Townsend.
There are several other Samuel Townsend's. The one you refer to from Athens Ohio, Samuel Hartley Townsend, was born in 1805. He had a son named Samuel that was born around 1830. That son Samuel moved to California and died there. This family descended from the Townsend's that came to America in 1712 from Bucklebury, Berkshire, England.
I hope I haven't confused you. Yes, there are many different lines of Townsend's! I have learned so much by joining the Townsend Society of America. Liane Townsend Fenimore has been most helpful. She guided me to a male Townsend from my family line in Maine.
I have looked at M Reynolds match on FTDNA ...is that your son? I like your idea of looking at the 1850 census and will do that with the one from Scipio, Meigs county, Ohio...where Samuel is living with his mother Loeda Irwin and his sister Elizabeth Townsend. I have a subscription to Ancestry and will see if I can find anything on Allison Woodrow Reynolds' parents. If you have access to Ancestry, let me know your email address and I'll send you a link to my tree.
Such a long message but I hope this helps. It's so fun to find stories of our ancestors, isn't it? I sure hope we can find the link between our two families!

Thanks for the info, Debbie. You've done a good job or researching. Yes that is my son. I have an account at ancestry but not a paid one right now. My tree is named Mack-Willard-Reynolds Family tree. I've already checked out the Reynolds trees there and like so many other trees, there is nothing to back up anything previous to Allison Woodrow Reynolds. I've been trying to connect the couple other Reynolds lines that match yDNA but no luck there either. Here is one: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reynolds-22341 and here is another branch that matches: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GSSF-RFH I reached out to the admin of the familytreedna Townsend group because they don't have it set to public. I've had no response.
