Biography

Horatio Townshend MP was born in Norfolk, England.

Horatio Townshend was born in 1682, the son of Horatio Townshend and Mary Ashe, most likely at Raynham in Norfolk. He was baptised in the parish church of East Raynham on 16 Jan 1682. His mother was recorded in the register as Mary. ^[1]

He held the position of one of the 30 directors of the South Sea Company from 1715-1718 ^[2] and in that capacity had links to the slave trade.

On 21 April 1721, Horatio married Alice Starkey. Their marriage took place at Westminster, Middlesex, England. ^[3]

Horatio and Alice had at least four children:

• Mary (1721)^[4]
• Horatio (1724) ^[5]
• Alice (1726) ^[6]
• Letitia (1726) ^[7]

The children were all baptised at St Andrew, Holborn, London.

Horatio died at the age of 69 and was buried in the cemetery of St George the Martyr, Brunswick Square, Middlesex, on 4 Oct 1751. ^[8]
