Katherine (Townsend) Bedingfeld was born in Norfolk, England.
Katherine was born in 1513 in Norfolk, England. She was the daughter of Sir Roger Townshend Knight of Raynham, Norfolk. [1][2][3]
Lady Katherine married Sir Henry Bedingfeld Knight by 1535, he was the son of Sir Edmund Bedingfeld Knight and Grace Marney of Oxborough, Norfolk. [1][4] By 1552, Dame Katherine and her husband Sir Henry had 10 children. Their sons were Edmond, Thomas, John, Nicholas, and Henry. Their daughters were Alice, Amy, Eve, Ruth, and Elizabeth. [4][5][3]
Queen Elizabeth I, created the Uniformity of Religion Doctrine. The people were expected to be tolerant of all religions (Protestant). The Bedingfeld's were strictly Catholic and Dame Katherine's husband, Sir Henry refused to accept the doctrine. Refusing to sign would mean you would pay fines and other punishments. Sir Henry was fined and sent to stay in a Manor 5 miles from his home. [6][7]
Dame Katherine became very ill and was dying. She sent a letter to the Queen and Privy Council and requested that her husband be allowed to come home and be with her during her final days. It is not known whether approval was given. [6] Katherine died in 1581 at their home of Oxburgh Hall in Oxborough, Norfolk. She was buried 7 Dec 1581at Saint John the Evangelist in Oxborough, Norfolk. [8][4][9][10]
