Edna, daughter of Francis "Frank" Trace and Flora Etta Peiffer, was born 30 January 1879 in Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.[1] On 18 October 1899 in Saegertown, Crawford County, she married Clinton I. Horth,[2] son of John "William" and Julia Horth. They had one daughter before divorcing:
Following their marriage the newlyweds Edna (age 21) and Clinton (26, bridge builder) returned to his native New York, where they lived next to his parents in Salamanca, Cattaraugus County, in 1900.[1] Clinton J. (age 31, mail carrier) and Edna M. Horth (24) moved to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, before 1905, when they were living with Edna's widowed 77-year-old maternal grandmother, Sarah Peiffer.[6] They remained in Jamestown, where the household in 1910 encompassed Clinton J. (age 36, mail carrier), Edna (31), their daughter Evelyn M. Horth (3), and an English-born boarder named Grace Cooper (27, nurse).[3]
Clinton appears to be living alone in New York on the 1915 state census.[7] In September 1918, her husband was working as a carpenter for Firestone Tire and Rubber in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, while she was living in Meadville.[8] He lists her as his contact, but they may already be separated legally as well as physically.[8]
Edna divorced her husband and returned to her parental home, which had been moved to Meadville, Crawford County, before 1920.[4] Thus, the household they rented at 274 Prospect Street included her parents Francis (age 68) and Flora Trace (66), Edna T. Horth (40, dry goods store saleswoman) and her daughter Evelyn M. Horth (14), and a roomer named Anna Haines (20, clerk for the railroad).[4]
After the death of her father in 1922[9] and her daughter's marriage in 1927,[5] Edna Trace Horth (age 50, saleslady in ready-to-wear shop) and Flora Trace (76) moved to a smaller residence on Walnut Street, where they were found in 1930.[10]
Some time following her mother's death on 1 June 1937,[11] Edna remarried to Cassius Laban "Cash" Smith. In 1940, Cassius Smith (age 58, men's clothing merchant) and Edna M. Smith (61) resided in Mead Township, Crawford County, with her widowed aunt [[Peiffer-196|Charlotte M. (Peiffer) Trace (76).[12] Edna and Cassius had each completed their sophomore year in high school; Charlotte finished grammar school.[12]
Edna died in 1965 and was buried at Greendale Cemetery in Meadville.[13]
