Biography

Frances Sophia Tracey was born about 1845-49 (See Notes) in Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of Daniel Tracey and Rebecca Kelley.[1]

She had two older brothers Charles Edward (1843) [2] and George Daniel (1845). Her mother Rebecca Kelley Tracey died about January 1850, possibly in childbirth.

Her father likely married again (wife's name unknown) about 1850 in Cornwallis, Kings, Nova Scotia, Canada, based on their daughter Rebecca Jane born about this time. Presumably, Daniel's second wife died in childbirth with Rebecca, or shortly thereafter from complications. This child was likely given up to be raised by another family.

About April 1851, Daniel was listed as head of household in the census as "Danial Trasy" with 2 females under age 10 (likely daughters Fannie and Rebecca), 2 males under age 10 (likely sons Charles and George), & 1 male age 30-40 in Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Step-mother Griffin

In 1854, Daniel married Elizabeth Griffin[3] and they had 5 children born between 1856 and 1865: John William, Ann Elizabeth,[4] Aribella, Lenora and James Walter.

Fannie's father Daniel passed away 14 Feb 1866 in Horton, Nova Scotia, at age 47. [5]

Marriage to Bishop

Frances (Fannie) married Daniel Bishop on 26 Jan 1871 in in Kings County, Nova Scotia, in the Baptist Church, by license.[6] Their siblings, Charles Edward Tracey and Mary O Bishop had married this same year, in June.

At the time of the 1871 Canada Census, Daniel and Frances Bishop were listed as living in Gasperau, Nova Scotia, along with Sarah Benjamin.[7]

Four Bishop Children born

Daniel and Fannie's daughter Udavilla was born in May 1871. They had 3 more children, Avard, Laura and Thaddeus, before Daniel died in 1877 in Nova Scotia.[8]

Two Children born out of wedlock

Fannie had 2 children born out of wedlock after Daniel's death. While their father is unknown, both Rose and Wiley took the surname Bishop.[9]

Move to Melrose, Massachusetts

In 1898, Fannie followed her children to Melrose, Massachusetts. She lived in Melrose with her children[10][11][12] until her death in 1936. She is buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Massachusetts, along with several of her children.[13]

Notes

Date of Birth

  • Most census records after 1871 show Fanny as born about 1847.
  • Her marriage record[6] suggests she was born 1849 (age 22 in 1871) and this is consistent with her age shown in 1871 census. She had no reason to make herself appear younger at marriage, as her husband was shown as age 32 at marriage and in 1871 census.[7]
  • Her date of birth is shown as 1845 on her gravestone.[13] This DOB means she was age 41 when she had her youngest child.
