Lucile was born on 19 Aug 1871 at Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of James Douthit Tradewell and Sarah Emma McCaine. [1] She married first to Gudstavus Gernand, who abandoned her before their daughter Frances was born in 1894. Lucile married second to Gustaf Sylvan, [2] who adopted Lucile's daughter Frances. Lucile passed away on 15 Jun 1961 at Columbia [3] and was buried there at Elmwood Cemetery. [4]
Lucile married Gudstavus (aka Robert?) Gernand of Baltimore on 16 June 1891 and they made their home in Baltimore. He deserted her before their daughter Frances was born 06 Apr 1894. Divorce was no easy matter in those days, so Lucile's widowed mother Emma went to live with Lucile and little Frances through the seven years that it took for Lucile to obtain a divorce.
Lucile soon after married Gustaf "Gus" Sylvan of Columbia, a kind, gentle and generous man. He adopted Frances and provided an affluent life for his wife and daughter.
When Lucile died on 15 June 1961, she was the last surviving child of James Douthit Tradewell’s thirteen children by two wives.

By Jouett Taylor Prisley: I had a sterling tea service that belonged to Aunt Lucile McIntosh Sylvan of Columbia, South Carolina. Uncle Gus Sylvan was a gentleman and angel, but Aunt Lucile was a self-centered battleaxe. Uncle Gus gifted prolifically. Aunt Lucile gifted only as lawyers let family into her estate. Warmth? Fond memories? None.
