Biography

JEAN TRAHAN is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 9 Right, Le Saint Remi, arrival 9 September 1785. Listed with him is his wife, Magdeleine Hebert, and four children: Michel, Pierre, Marie Louise and Felicite.^[1][2]

Jean-Baptiste Trahan, son of Joseph Trahan and Élisabeth Thériot, was born 17 January 1735 in Rivière-aux-Canards, Acadie. ^[3] In the "Great Upheaval" his family was deported from Acadie and ultimately imprisoned in Liverpool, England. At the end of the war, he was "on the list taken by agent George Langton at Liverpool on 7 June 1763, with 40 numbered family groups, who were delivered to the Sieur De La Rochette, and embarked on board Le Sturgeon, commanded by Captain Belon, and bound for France, Family # 42."^[4] They arrived in Chantenay, France in 1777. The family and four children left Nantes, France on le Saint Remi on 27 June 1785, bound for a new life in Louisiana. They had been living in Belle-Isle-en-Mer.^[5]

Jean died at his son-in-law's home, age 77, on 11 November 1808 in Vermilion, then-St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, and was buried the next day at in St. Martinville, Louisiana.^[6]
