Biography

Christian Trail was born on 11 March 1845 in Peterhead Aberdeenshire, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Trail (1817– ) and Anna Tait (~1820–1852).

Christian, daughter of Alexander Traill & Ann Tait, was born on 11 March 1845 in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[1]

Her mother Anna died when she was 7 and her father Alexander married again to Elizabeth Cow who was always known as "midder" (Aberdeenshire dialect for mother). In the 1861 census the family were living at Pittulie in the parish of Pitsligo. Alexander was 44, Elizabeth, 24, Christian, 16, John was 15, Ellen Ann,2? *And Alexander was 4. Christian must have worked and when she was going to marry James Buchan she wanted to buy a silk dress but her stepmother insisted she bought 2 handmade blankets instead. It was said that she hated these for the rest of her life! She took herself by train to London when she was 19 and married James (1864). He was sailor on a sailing ship at the time. She brought up a family of 10 children presumably largely on her own and must have moved house several times being in London when Chrissie was born, Gourock when Mary was born (1884) and Sheffield when Sarah was born (1888). When she was first married she went to sea with James taking the children or at least the baby with her. In 1873 Christian was with James and baby Chrissie in Mexico. She had to give up travelling when their family grew too large. When James stopped sailing on the ocean going ships and captained coasters instead ,Christian would meet him in Boston, Lincolnshire. As she travelled by train she met some coarse-fishermen and started talking about towns convenient for either Boston or Liverpool (ports where James sailed from). One of them said that Sheffield was nicer than Leeds and hence the move to Sheffield. During the First World War she moved in with Mary her daughter who by now was married and had a little boy, Denis. Chrissie and Sally lived there too. She died of influenza in 1917.
