The manufacture of singular and curiously hooped vessels called piggins or noggins, holding less than a pint measure, and long since superseded by pitcher basins, now so common in domestic use, has been discontinued generations ago. One of these articles, which was made in Uttoxeter, and was a heirloom of an Uttoxeter family more than two hundred years, is now in my possession. It consists of eight narrow oak staves or laggins only, including the handle. It is three inches and a quarter in length, outside, and five inches and a half wide. The handle is two-and-a-half inches in length. It has one wood hoop on it only, which is fastened by four notched buckles or straps, which pass through as many loops with notches in, so that when it was driven down to its intended place it became perfectly tight, and rendered the vessel secure against leakage. Wooden vessels for the dairy, especially milk pails, gauns, and round churns, were formerly hooped generally in a similar way with wood hoops, but the hoops were not so intricately constructed for these articles, having only one tongue to be notched on to the vessels with. But pails, gauns, round churns, buckets, cheese tubs, oval kimnels, and brewing vessels for private and public-house use, are now rarely required, tin and galvanized vessels having taken the place of some of the things named, and large breweries having rendered the others of no use.
