Genealogy Research
I became interested in genealogy after learning my maternal grandfather new nothing about his father (my great grandfather), Bill Smitherman's, family. All he knew were his parent's name. Bill had a rough childhood and did not like talking about it. He wasn't raised by his parents and we still don't know why to this day. So unfortunately, much of his story died with him. I've been helping my grandfather learn what we can about Bill's biological family. I've spent the majority of my time researching and learning about the Smitherman side of heritage. I still have a long way to go, but am loving the journey.
A big surprise for my family (on all sides) was to learn how long we have lived in the United States. I have yet to find the immigration story for the majority of the branches in my tree. Most of the family was here in the early-mid 1700s. One of my biggest genealogy goals is to learn the immigration story for all branches of my family tree.

Thank you for joining the Southern Super Sweepers for the 2023 Source-a-Thon! Dorothy will be starting a chat page on G2G when we get a little closer to the Thon. Our team page is here:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Southern_Super_Sweepers.
It has, among other info, the thon's video chat schedule, and a link to the Southern Super Sweepers discord channel.
We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.
Micah, I have awarded your United States History badge for your interest in Texas. YOu are also listed on the Member's page there in the topic is blue. Look around and see if you want to add more to any county or a Space page on a topic.
Thank you for contributing to the March 2022 Sourcerers Challenge! As you know, every source added to an unsourced profile improves our One Tree. Thank you for taking time from your own family history to help others.
Hi! The default text/parameters for all of the state stickers (e.g., the Iowa Sticker) have now been updated to where the default text can be changed - and the default text for many of the stickers was also changed last month. You can change "was" to "is" using |living=y but you can also change the default text - for example, "... an Iowan." to "... born in Iowa."
See the sticker's template page, e.g., Template: Iowa Sticker for more information. Give a holler if you have any questions.
Thank you for again contributing to the Sourcerers Challenge in January! As you know, every source added to an unsourced profile improves our One Tree. Thank you for taking time from your own family history to help others.

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources; find or merge duplicates; clean up GEDCOM or merged biographies; or interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!
Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!
It’s very important to read and understand Pre-1700 Profiles. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page. We appreciate all of your expertise!
I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.
It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.
You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources and ask questions. Check here for tips.
I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.
Happy tree climbing
