Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

John Travers (or Travis or Traverse) was born in about 1818 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

John married Sarah (Sankey) Ellison on 22 Apr 1839 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and lived in Eccleston. John was a shoemaker, and hadn't been married before; Sarah was a widow. Their fathers were named as Joseph Travis (shoemaker) and William Sankey (farmer). The witnesses were John Southern and James Southern.

Their twins Ann and Joseph were christened on 16 Feb 1840 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Their father's occupation was recorded as shoe maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Little Ann died in 1840, aged 9 months; she was buried on 2 Nov 1840 at Prescot St Mary's. Her address was recorded as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, John and Sarah were living in Eccleston. They were in the same building as Richard and Martha Arnold and their family, so were probably lodging or boarding with them. John was a shoemaker; John and Sarah had just one child, one-year-old Joseph.

Little Joseph died at 17 months old; he was buried on 30 Jun 1841 at Prescot St Mary's. His address was recorded as Eccleston.

John and Sarah's daughter Alice was christened on 9 Feb 1842 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as shoemaker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their son Joseph was christened on 25 Feb 1844 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as shoe maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their daughter Sarah was christened on 12 Apr 1846 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as cordwainer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their daughter Mary Ann was christened on 29 Oct 1848 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as shoe maker, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their son William was christened on 6 Nov 1850 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as shoe maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their daughter Jane was christened on 16 Nov 1853 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as shoemaker, and the family's address as Sutton.

Their daughters Jane and Martha were christened on 27 Mar 1859 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Their father's occupation was recorded as shoemaker, and the family's address as Eccleston. (This appears to have been the same Jane who was christened in 1853, so either the second record was her being received into church or her earlier christening had been forgotten.)
