Town of Russia - Major Kenneth H. Travis, USAF (Ret.), 93, formerly of Military Road, Poland, died on September 13, 2009, at the Masonic Care Community, Utica. Mr. Travis was born on September 11, 1916, in the Town of Manheim, a son of the late Ira and Katherine (Leavenworth) Travis. He received his education in Manheim rural schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on October 28, 1935. Ken served as a flight instructor during WW II and remained in active duty in the U.S. Air Force for ten years. He then served in the Air Force Reserves for an additional thirty years until his retirement on September 11, 1976, at the rank of major. Mr. Travis worked in law enforcement with the Little Falls Police Department from 1953 to 1957 and served as Chief of the Dolgeville Police Department from 1957-1959. On May 7, 1966, he was united in marriage with the former Betty J. McFarlan in Canaan, CT. In later years, he worked as a cabinet builder and in other capacities in the construction business. Betty preceded him in death on February 11, 1999, and Ken moved to the Masonic Care Community in September of 2008. Mr. Travis was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his children, Catherine Rickard and her husband, John, of Cold Brook, Michele Carbone and her husband, Mike, of Remsen, Kenneth Travis, Jr., and his wife, Cindee, of Cold Brook, and David Travis, of Poland; children from his first marriage, Robert Travis and his wife, Grace, of Ilion, and JoAnn McKenney and her fianc, Tom Merry, of Vernon Center; 14 grandchildren, Tammy Hendrick, Robert, Amanda and Nathan Travis, Peter, Kathleen and Meghan McKenney, Wayne, Jr., and Daniel Huckabone, Michaela Carbone and Scott, Adam, Allison and Austin Travis; five step-children, Judy Goggin, Stacia Foss, Teresa Lockwood, Julie Tabor and Richard Stead; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Calvin and Walter Travis; one sister, Evelyn Gallt; and two granddaughters, Tanya Travis and Karen Kretser. A graveside service will be held at Ephratah Rural Cemetery on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dwayne A. Durand, Pastor of the Kuyahoora Community Church, officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Air Force. Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, are Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Travis family extends their sincere thanks to the Westchester Unit at Masonic Care Community and Dr. Olteanu for their compassionate care.
