Biography

Christina (Travis) Hopkins was born in 1825 in Pike County, Ohio.[1] She was the daughter of Asa Travis.[2] In 1830 her parents and six siblings moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana.[3] Her father died in 1836,[4] when Christina was eleven years old. Christina was one of the five children listed as underage in his probate records.[4][5]

She does not show in an 1840 census record, as only the head of household was recorded, but she was most likely in the home of one of her brothers. In the year 1850 she was recorded as being in the home of her brother Jacob.[6] Christina married Thomas Franklin Hopkins on the 21st of September 1854 in Carroll County, Indiana.[7]

Thomas and Christina were living with Thomas' parents in 1860.[8] Their first three children were in the home. Their fourth child would be born a year later.

  1. Charles F. Hopkins b. 1856[8]
  2. Edmania Menetta Hopkins b. 1858[8]
  3. Minerva Hopkins b. 1859[8]
  4. Anderson Hoytson Hopkins b. abt 1861, m. Kate Hayes Edwards[9]

Thomas worked with his father (also Thomas) on the farm.[8] Christina, at age twenty-three, was most likely kept busy with the little ones. Her mother-in-law Mary, sixty-five, was also in the home.[8]

1870 is still somewhat of a mystery. There is a census record in Clay Township, Carroll county for a Christina Hopkins, but "Franklin" is eight years younger than her. There is a child Edmund N Hopkins that wasn't in the 1860 census, and an Ardelia L Hopkins, the same age as Minverva, that doesn't match. Anderson H. Hopkins and the grandfather of the children, Thomas Hopkins Sr, were the only other similarities. Jeneva F was born only two years before, so could have belonged to this Christina. The 1880 census shows children Edmania, Ardilla, Anderson, and Geneva.

Christina died before 1900, as Thomas was enumerated in the census in Clay, Carroll county, Indiana and listed as a widower,[10] Her children would have all been grown, with children of their own by then.

Research Notes

  • Please see the note within the marriage source. Thomas Hopkins is the correct spouse for her. (Silva-1055 14:00, 16 January 2021 (UTC))
  • The 1870 census that appears to be them has different children. Anderson H is still there, Geneva was born after 1860 so is okay. Thomas' father Thomas was still in the home. For the older two children they are Edmund N and Ardelia L, which doesn't match the 1860 children. Edmania M. matches Minetta's birth estimate. I could see Thomas Jr going by Franklin (his middle name) but then the age is also wrong, as it states he was 8 years younger than Christina rather than 6 years older, as in the 1860 census.[11] (Silva-1055 14:12, 18 January 2021 (UTC))
  • For the above-mentioned census - I wonder if it is the 1860 census that is wrong. In 1880 there was a census record for Christina, four years older than her husband Thomas F Hopkins. The children in the household were Edmania M, Ardilla L, Anderson H, and Geneva F Hopkins.[12] (Silva-1055 14:12, 18 January 2021 (UTC))
  • There is a probation file for a Thomas Hopkins in Carroll County, but it is for the will of Thomas P. Hopkins with bequests to his wife Mary B. Hopkins and sons George H. Hopkins, Thomas F. Hopkins, and John E. Hopkins. This may have been for the father-in-law of Christina. (Silva-1055 14:14, 18 January 2021 (UTC))
