Biography

William Barrett Traverse was born about 1748, son of William Traverse (1725 - 1765) and Margaret (Smallwood) Travis (1725 - 1765). William married Anne Middleton Smallwood (1755 - 1812). Their children were:

  4. Mary M. (Travis) Wilson (1778 - 1816)
  5. Catherine (Travis) Pope (~1780 - 1816)
  6. Mark Butler Travis Sr. (1783 - 1836)
  7. Sarah (Travis) Stallworth (1785 - 1824)
  8. Prior Smallwood Travis (1785 - 1820)
  9. Rev Alexander Doniphan Travis (1790 - 1852).

William died about 1812 in Edgefield, South Carolina, United States aged ~64. He is buried in Travis Park Cemetery, Saluda, Saluda County, South Carolina, USA.[1]


Research Notes

Berwick Traverse

April 12, 1763 - Barrick Travis was indentured to one Robert Watson to learn a trade, he unsuccessfully petitioned the orphans' court to release from his indentures. The record recites "Upon the petition of Barrick Traverse against Robert Watson for ill usage and for the detaining of him, this day came the parties by their attorneys, who being fully heard it is considered by the court that the petition be dismissed". On April 13, 1763, the court further ordered "That whereas Sanford Gorham, an evidence for Barrick Traverse against Robert Watson, having attended court four days, it is ordered that the said Barrick pay him one hundred pounds of tobacco for his trouble". On December 13, 1763, that "Whereas the complaint of Barrick Traverse against Robert Watson for ill usage was dismissed, it is ordered that the said Robert use the said Barrick better for the future". (Loudon O.B. B, pp 93, 608, 269) Loudoun Co, VA

Spelling of his name should have been Berwick Traverse as indicated in his land grant.

"GEORGE THE THIRD, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, KING, Defender of the Faith, etc., xxx Know ye, that we do give and grant to BERWICK TRAVERSE, his heirs and assigns, a plantation or tract of land containing one hundred acres situated in Berkley County on the north side of the Saludy River, bounded north east and east on land held by Donniphan, north west on land held by Weil, south east on land held by John Dooly and all other sides by vacant land. Witness his Excellency, the Rt. Hon. Lord Charles G.1. Montagu, Captain General, etc., of our said Province of South Carolina, this 14th day of August, A.D. 1772, in the twelfth year of our reign." (Grant Book, 26, p. 437)

1790 - First US Census - listed as head of family on page 65, fourth name from the last on the third column, name is illegible. Shown with three sons, three daughters, and three slaves. Listed in the same area with Jacob Smith, Captain William Butler, Arthur and William Watson, James Grigsby, Christopher Brooks, Sr., and Jr., Mumford Perryman, Fredric Sisson, and Samuel DeLoach. He settled on Red Bank Creek, a branch of the Little Saluda River.

1812 - Died intestate; Anne, his wife and son, Reverend Alexander Travis filed papers of administration on October 3, 1814. Anne received from the sale of personal property the sum of $1,354.44. Each child received $374.83.

Will dated December 23, 1814.

Travis-3727 and Traverse-19 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death information.
This needs to be merged with Travers-319. They are clearly the same person. If the correct parents aren't sure, they should be disconnected and list them both in Research Notes.
